UCSC Colleges: College Ten

This post is part of a series about the colleges at UC Santa Cruz. For more information and a general overview of the college system at UCSC, see this post.

History

College Ten was founded in 2002, shortly after College Nine. College Ten does not have a benefactor yet, and so still does not have a name.

Theme

College Ten’s theme is “Social Justice and Community”, and the required core course focuses on equality for all across a variety of issues — sexuality, environment, race, economic class, and more.

Location

College Ten is located right next to College Nine at the north end of campus. College Ten is very conveniently located — both Science Hill and the bookstore area are a short walk away.

Colleges Nine and Ten share a bus stop that the campus loop buses stop at in both directions, making it a quick ride to most places on campus. The only places that are a bit tough to reach are the media theater area and the McHenry Library, both near the center of campus. No buses run straight to these places, so you’ll need to do at least some walking, but the walk will be downhill on the way.

Housing

There are three different residential hall buildings at College Ten, containing three room sizes: singles, doubles, and triples. The majority of students will be placed into a double or a triple, but the rooms are pretty spacious to make up for it. The bathrooms on the floors are coed, so be prepared to see the opposite sex in the bathrooms.

Apartment buildings

College Ten shares its apartments with College Nine, much like Crown and Merrill do. These apartments hold four or five students in singles, doubles and triples. The apartments are tucked away in the redwoods behind the dorms of Nine and Ten and look very modern and appealing. Most have a balcony or deck so you can relax outside and enjoy the scenery. They’re secluded enough that it’s usually pretty quiet back there.

Dining

College Nine and Ten share a dining hall. The food is pretty good, though it could use a little more variety. Many popular dishes — such as hamburgers, french fries, and pizza — are served daily.

The dining hall is open until midnight most days, but on Fridays and Saturdays it closes at 7 PM. Crown/Merrill’s dining hall is nearby and open late.

Things to Remember

  • Stereotypically, residents of College Ten are mostly Asian. The international students are housed at Nine and Ten, so there is some slight truth to this. However, there is still a good mix of students there of all races.
  • College Ten is very similar to Nine. The two don’t really have separate identities as colleges yet.
  • Don’t underestimate how well-located College Ten is. Convenient access to buses, as well as a short walking distance to two important areas on campus, is extremely useful.
  • College Ten is UCSC’s newest college, and so is very modern — the rooms are spacious and accommodating.

Well I don’t know too much outside about the school besides what you’ve written, but you are right – they do look appealing! I need to go back to college…lol! :-)

Also, the dining halls you got the schedule all wrong. Something a little research could fix.

@Kim: Thank you for the corrected hours. The hours I’ve posted are actually from last year.

right now I am a incoming freshmen.. I am scared to enter college. I am a pure asian who just came here last year so my english is not good enough to communicate to those people who have straight english , So my question is …. If College Ten and nine is not the place where alot of asian live what College is the best for me that there is someone that could understand me specially when I could not express my self because I could not speak proper english?
