At the undergrad level, the difference between the UC system and CSU systems generally focus on prestige. If you compare two generic liberal arts degrees from each system, odds are the UC grad would get a slight advantage. However, there's a solution to this. If you are a CSU student, focus on a specialized degree or apply to a specialized Cal State school.

For graduate school, the differences vaporize since aptitude tests (LSAT, MCAT, GMAT, etc) take precedence over the name of the school you graduated from. Also, real world experience can also be factored in (e.g, MBA programs).

[...] ELC, short for “Eligibility in the Local Context”, is California’s way of guaranteeing you admission into one of the 9 University of California campuses (not the CSUs — know the difference). [...]

As reported this week by the Merced Sun-Star (http://www.mercedsunstar.com/167/story/418846.html), UC Merced's enrollment is well beyond 1,000. In fact, we have about 1,000 students just living on campus this year. We won't have final figures until mid-September, but enrollment estimates for this semester fall between 2,600 and 2,700 students.
