Good article. There are problems with the quality of the data but really I think that is minor. The biggest failure, which you address, is that you can't summarize a school with one ranking. I do think they have some value but yes, people have to understand that they are very insufficient. They can tell you Princeton is a good school. @Mark: It’s not. I think most people just assume that the lists are based on solid and objective fact.

Tell us how you really feel! But I really do like the honesty because that is ridiculous that colleges will leave out their lower SAT scores from athletes to get better rankings, how is that fair at all?
