Why you should wait until July to buy a computer for college

If you’re going to be buying a new computer for college (or even just in general), it may be in your best interest to hold off until July 1st.

Microsoft is releasing its newest operating system, Windows 7, pretty soon. Although still in release candidate state, Windows 7 so far seems very highly regarded as a definite improvement to Windows Vista. Windows 7 is smaller, faster, and more powerful than its predecessor.

Microsoft has said that all new computers purchased after July 1st will be able to upgrade to Windows 7 from Windows Vista for free.

So, if you wait until July 1st to buy a computer, you’ll be able to upgrade your operating system at no charge!

I’m an avid netbook user, and I’m not rushing out to upgrade Windows 7, despite many positive user reviews. I’m happy with Windows XP and I resisted the urge to upgrade to vista last year. I know it’s a cliche’ but “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” :)
