I think that taking a gap year after high school is a great option if you don’t know what career you want to enter into. So many people waste a lot of money by going to college and then realizing half way through that they want to pursue a different degree. Take your time and make the best decision for your future. Be productive in your gap year and focus on your personal development.

I think for many students, a gap year is a fantastic idea. Many countries in Europe have seen this as an accepted practice for years, although the key is definitely to travel, to volunteer, to get out and do some of the things you've always wanted to do. I’d highly recommend taking a gap year. By the time most people finish high school, they haven’t quite found themselves yet. Traveling can definitely help in that respect. Plus, it gets more and more difficult to travel as you get older, due to increased commitments like a job, kids, marriage, etc.

I was first introduced to this idea of a gap year when traveling abroad. I was sort of taking a "gap year" myself but did not even know it. It's much more common in other countries. I think it's a great idea after college and before people take on a full fledged career or a masters program. Thanks for reminding people that there is more to life than just work and career. Gap years are all right if you have something planned, but if you just take a year off you might get too comfortable and change your mind about college. Not that college is for everyone, but if you work in a deli for a year because you didn’t feel like going on straight to college, you might decide you’re content, and not be motivated to better yourself. This is especially true if you already know what you want to do, and are actually smart enough to get a degree
