Dorm beds use Twin-XL sheets! Don’t forget!

college-dorm-sheets

A common mistake when dorm shopping that people make is buying the wrong type of sheets. Many will go out buying new bedsheets, and mistakenly buy Twin sizes.

While I’m sure there are some exceptions, the vast majorities of college dorm mattresses use Twin XL sized sheets. A lot of people never even hear about this size of sheet until it comes time to for dorm shopping.

Twin XL beds are as wide as normal twin beds, but they’re an extra five inches longer, presumably to accommodate taller students.

Where can I find Twin-XL sheets?

For most of the year, twin XL sheets aren’t sold in stores, but as college move in approaches, many stores will begin their yearly college sales. This is the best time to buy this specific type of sheet, and your local Wal-Mart, Target, or Bed Bath and Beyond should carry them.

Just make sure you check the package before buying to make sure you have the right kind of sheets! Finding out on move in day is never fun.

What about blankets and other sheets?

The only two things that actually need to be Twin XL are your fitted sheet and, if you have one, a mattress pad. The rest of your sheets and blankets can be whatever size you want. If you frequently make your bed properly, then don’t be surprised when a couple of your blankets seem a bit short.

Of course, you’ll almost never buy a fitted sheet on its own, so you’ll likely end up with a pack of sheets sized Twin XL.  But you definitely don’t need to worry about your blankets being the right length.

I appreciate the fact that Target and Wal-Mart are very college friendly, and they definitely offer the right dorm sheets and other things that you may need that are compact and easy to store in your dorm room.

As the sizes of beds, mattresses and duvets may vary from dorm to dorm – It is always worth checking up with the dorm’s authority about sizes.

@Milly: That’s true, though for the most part the Twin XL is the standard choice.

Thread count is kinda important as well, you don’t want to end up with sheets like the ones in hotels.

@Sharon: Definitely. If you’re willing to spend a little more, better thread count can make a world of difference. Thanks for the tip!

I managed to find some Twin XL sheets on eBay, at a good price too. This was really handy because I was buying them at a time of year when they weren’t readily available in the shops, and I found a much better selection online.

@Pete: That’s a good call. I had to order a fitted sheet from Bed, Bath, and Beyond specifically, which meant paying for more shipping and waiting longer for it to come =(

Yeah that’s the problem :( Having said that, with eBay you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get; at least with B, B & B you can be pretty confident that the stuff should be of good quality, so I guess it’s not all bad!

I recently made this mistake when sending my first child off to college with traditional sized twin sheets, and when we got there I had to search all over town for a new set. There should be more articles like these for college students parents. Thank you for this information, I wish I would have found it sooner!

I’ve never heard of Twin XL sheets! Thanks for the tip – people usually don’t think about these kind of things when preparing for college.
