Bringing you safely through high school and into college

108 College dorm necessities to have on your checklist

As it comes closer and closer to the time to move in to your new college dorm, you’re going to eventually be faced with the prospect of buying all of the wonderful things you’ll need next year. While buying new things is always exciting, when you need a whole bunch of things for your new dorm, it’s pretty easy to forget at least one or two things that should be on your checklist.

Your school surely sent you a nice little checklist of things you should bring, but a lot of times that list is very brief and will leave off many essential items. I’ve just finished my own dorm shopping, and I put together a nice list of things I have bought, have considered buying, or have been recommended to buy.

Now, every college is different. What you need will vary from school to school. Some of these items may be provided for you (like wastebaskets), and some may not apply to you depending on what your dorm is like (like a rug). Your school will surely have guidelines about what is acceptable and what is not, and these will definitely vary from school to school. If you are at all unsure, it’s always best to either ask the school or to ask someone who has lived in your college’s dorms before.

Also, only bring what you will actually use. If there’s something on this checklist that you won’t ever use, then don’t buy it! When it comes to toiletries and school supplies, everybody has his or her own tastes and preferences. Do what works for you. This checklist is only here to help remind you of what it might be nice to have.

All that said, here’s a list of things that you might want to have:

Clothing

Chances are you’re already fine in the clothing department because you’ll be taking a lot of your current clothes with you, but it’s best to always make sure you have enough of what you need.

  • Pants/shorts
  • Shirts, t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts
  • Sweatshirts
  • Pajamas or other night-wear
  • Robe
  • Sportswear, as needed (basketball shorts, tank tops, etc)
  • Underwear!
  • Plenty of socks
  • Belt(s)
  • A couple good pairs of shoes
  • Flip flops (a college essential!)
  • Rain gear suitable for big downpours
  • Snow gear, if it snows where you’re going to school
  • Quality hat
  • Gloves
  • Watch
  • Plenty of purses (ladies)
  • One formal outfit

Laundry

Ideally, you don’t want to have to do laundry more than once a week. If you buy enough supplies, you can cut down the amount of time you waste doing laundry big time.

  • Fabric softener
  • Bleach (colorsafe is always good!)
  • Laundry detergent
  • Something to put your dirty clothes in. Make sure you’re also able to carry it easily to the laundry room. I got a nice nylon bag that won’t take up too much space nor be too hard to carry.
  • An iron, if necessary
  • Marking pen
  • Stain remover

Bathroom Essentials

This is where it becomes easy to forget something. There are so many little things, you’re likely to forget something. If it’s something that runs out, like soap, toothpaste, etc., it might be best to buy it in bulk now so that you don’t have to worry about it running out on you at the worst of times.

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste
  • Razors and shaving cream
  • Shampoo, conditioner, body wash
  • Soap
  • Floss
  • Hair Dryer
  • Tweezers
  • Band aids and other first aid essentials
  • Tampons, pads (for the ladies)
  • Makeup (also for the ladies)
  • Anything needed for contact lenses or glasses
  • Anything needed for a retainer you might have
  • Deodorant
  • Chap stick
  • Q-tips
  • Brush/comb
  • Fingernail/toenail clippers
  • Gel/mouse/hair spray
  • Perfume/cologne
  • Mouthwash
  • Aspirin and other must-have over-the-counter medications for conditions you may have, like allergies, stomachache, etc. It’s better to have these on hand now than have to get them when you feel awful. Things like vitamins and cough drops are good to have.
  • Lotions, moisturizers, whatever such things you use
  • Towels, hand towels, and washcloths. I recommend having at least 3 towels, 3 hand towels, and 7 washcloths, that way you can go a week without doing laundry if you double up slightly.
  • Flip flops are a great way to prevent athelete’s foot in the showers.
  • Something to carry all this in when you go to the bathroom

Electronics & Appliances

  • Computer. Laptops are preferable (how to pick a good computer & quality free software)
  • Printer
  • Ethernet cord
  • Some way to secure your laptop, like a lock
  • A carrying case for your laptop
  • Alarm clock
  • Speakers for your computer and/or a stereo
  • USB drive. Most sizes are fine, but I recommend at least one gigabyte.
  • Blank media, like CD-Rs or DVD-Rs.
  • MP3/CD(/tape?) player and headphones
  • Desk lamp
  • Power strip with many outlets. Find one with a surge protector!
  • Extension cord.
  • Camera
  • Phone for using on the land line. You never know when your cell phone might be on the fritz.
  • Small fan and/or heater depending on what the climate is like
  • Chargers for anything that uses one: cell phones, iPods, electric razors, cameras, etc.
  • Batteries for anything that needs them: remote controls, alarm clocks, MP3 players, etc. It’s always better to have too many than not have any when you need them most.
  • 2/3 prong adapters.

Bedroom Essentials

  • Bed sheets. Colleges always seem to use extra long sheets, so when you go shopping, look for “Extra Long Twin” if that’s how your school goes. I recommend buying two sets.
  • Blankets. Make sure you have enough to keep you warm, and it’s good to have an extra, for whatever reason.
  • Mattress pad
  • Posters & pictures to decorate your dorm
  • Storage containers, as needed
  • Hangers to put all of your clothes on
  • Bulletin/white board
  • Flashlight
  • Febreeze or some other odor remover
  • Curtains, if not already provided
  • Night light
  • Post-It notes
  • Rug if you have hardwood floors
  • Calendar
  • Maybe a broom and a dustpan?
  • Waste basket IF your school doesn’t supply one.

School Essentials

Sorry, just because you’re out of high school doesn’t mean you can get out of good ol’ Back to School shopping! Luckily, because you’re older, you no longer need as much of the other things like glue, colored pencils, and so forth.

  • Pens and pencils
  • Plenty of binder and printer paper
  • Paperclips
  • Index cards
  • Ruler
  • Stamps and envelopes
  • Notebooks and/or binders
  • Folders
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Stapler and staples
  • Highlighters
  • Scissors
  • Backpack
  • Calculator
  • Hole punch
  • Tape, both scotch and masking tape

Double up on?

For some things, it’s nice to talk to your roommate to see if you two can share some items so that you don’t have to bring two of something and waste space. There are many other items on this list that you could consider sharing, but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you know your roommate particularly well and have discussed this beforehand. Here are good items to consider sharing:

  • TV
  • DVD player, VCR
  • An ironing board, if needed
  • Chair(s), bean bag(s)
  • Microwave
  • Mini-Fridge
  • Video game systems

Phew! And that’s the end. If there’s anything I’ve missed, please let me know!

Great tips and I’d definitely go along with the advice of taking a mattress pad. College dorm beds are renowned for having poor quality mattresses which a mattress pad can go a long way towards fixing.

@Charles: There’s definitely a lot of truth there. My mattress was uncomfortable, and my bed just wasn’t that great all year. People who bought thick mattress pads got by just fine thoguh.

Your list seems pretty complete! I know when i was in college i didn’t have that much stuff, but all of it seems pretty useful. I might have just missed it on the list, but a george forman is probably a college kids best friend!

@Nick: Definitely. Nobody will need everything on the list, but they’re all good things to bear in mind.

i find that a bedside buddy is very useful to keep things in expecially if your bed is raised and your desk is under you bed

Other essentials I found for the dorm room I moved into was needing a shower curtain and bathmat because I had a suite bathroom that was shared with 3 other girls. So I not only had to coordinate with my roommate, but I had to get with my suitemates too about who would provide those things and what colors we wanted.

Other fun things to do with your roommate is maybe figure out a color scheme or theme for your dorm room. Two girls on my floor did that and they’re room was definitely the cutest.

Another item that is definitely necessary is a mini fridge or freezer. My dorm room came with one, but it didn’t really have a freezer. The freezer was so tiny that it couldn’t hold ice cream and only 1 frozen dinner. So either a mini fridge with a separate freezer is good to have or a mini freezer if your dorm comes with fridge. Trust me, sometimes you’re going to want that frozen tv dinner over whatever is being served in the cafeteria!

July 1st, 2009 12:47 pm

@Christine: Definitely a good call with all of that. Having a shower curtain and bathmat are crucial if you don’t use a common bathroom. Coming up with a color scheme beforehand is also pretty clever as well, that way your dorm will feel much more like home.

Good call with the freezer as well. My roommate and I had a tiny freezer that really ended up being useless, we could barely fit anything in it. However, most mini-fridges come with tiny freezers and that’s all you have.

I read this on a different website…..duct tape! household essential, and what about bathroom cleaning supplies…..a toilet brush, toilet cleaner, if you could get everyone to do this, a squeegee in the shower is a big time saver when cleaning day comes around!

13. simon from braided rugs

July 13th, 2009 4:56 pm

If you plan on getting a rug, get a braided rug. They’re inexpensive, virtually indestructible, and look really cool. Plus when you finish college they’re easy to sell on ebay.

Nice list of items. For me I would say the shower flip flops are a must!! The bathrooms get dirty even though they get cleaned every other day. After all it’s college and well, people puke may it be your own floor mates or just visitors. Also some people suck at aiming and pee all over the floors. So bring flip flops or sandals and the likes.

15. Paul

July 13th, 2009 11:23 pm

@vince: Very true, I even wrote a post about flip flops in showers. My dorm’s bathroom floors were disgusting.

17. Darry from Appliance Parts

July 17th, 2009 10:03 am

I should give my list to my bother, he is going to be a college freshman this year and you could use some tips. I think he could use few more appliances, he only has a microwave and a toaster but that’s after he’ll meet his dormmates.

18. Paul

July 17th, 2009 10:34 am

@Darry: You really don’t need many appliances in a dorm — a TV, a refrigerator, and a microwave are pretty much the only ones you need unless you’re living in an apartment and cooking your own meals.

You should check on whether or not you owill need quarters to do laundry on campus… it can be hard to find quarters when you realize at the last minute that you need to do a quick load of laundry. The quarter machines are notorious for being out whenever you NEED change.

22. Paul

August 2nd, 2009 5:17 pm

@Carrie: Great tip! I went through quarters FAST last year, and it’s true, the quarter machines were always inconveniently out of quarters. Good call!

Great list it definatly helped me out…

one suggestion(i might have just overlooked it on the list)
A whole section could be writted on shelves/baskets and things there are some really clever ways to store things in a dorm to save space you could add a few tips about storing things and the best advice that i got from my older sister is where to store certain things, it makes dorm life alot easier when certain items are more easily obtainable on a day to day basis

26. Paul

@Mike: That’s a great idea, I’ll write a post about that soon!

Another thing that I wouldn’t be able to live without is a can opener. The cafeteria has its days when you wonder if the ‘meat’ is still alive, soup is always an easy fix. Of course if you do do heat up anything in a microwave, you’ll need to find some microwave safe bowls and plates(which are now at the front of walmart in the school section).

28. Paul

August 19th, 2009 12:20 pm

@Caitlin: Definitely a good idea with the can opener.

Very helpful list; just a quick tip, if you have a small closet to make the most out of closet space is to invest in the new slim hangers, they are covered in this non-slip fabric and amazingly give you double the space! They are a slight investment but in the long run a great space saver.

31. Nicola from alessi kettle

September 23rd, 2009 7:20 am

Nothing like home conforts, you cant get up for a day of work without a nice hot cup of heat and a couple of slices of toast. So a kettle and a toaster. Your student loan wont lost long if your heading to starbucks for coffee and breakfast every morning. And a bottle opener preferable a keyring one thats you always carry with you. You never know when people are going to hand you a beer!

One thing that I don’t think anyone mentioned is a planner. Yeah, I know, many people use their iPhones or laptops to keep a schedule/calendar going. For some reason I find an old fashioned paper planner so much more effective. I use it more, it’s faster to write something down in, and usually alot less tempting for people to steal.

Presumably you left out a large truck to cart all the stuff to college…lol. No there are some good items listed here and you have a pretty comprehensive list that people can pick and choose from. For instance, not everyone will have a computer and all the peripherals…however most campuses will have access to computers so that shouldn’t be a problem. It the creature comforts that I think are most important. Others things you can buy along the way.

I am going to send this to my younger brother who is a freshmen.

LOL great list however I don’t think you’d need everything. Like printers, etc, you can always borrow or use the library. It gets quite expensive to buy everything. Most people don’t have all that money left over after buying books and admin fees.

48. Gustav from Sonic Boom Alarm Clock

You must have spent a lot of time compiling this list as it is exceptionally complete. I wish that I had it when I was in college. A good alarm clock is a must, and if it has a battery backup, all the better. If you have trouble waking up…well there is the sonic boom clock. Besides the loud noise, it also shakes your bed.
