Yes a credit card is an easy way to build a credit score while in college. Car loans are another way to build up a credit score that most young people overlook, even if you save up the money for the car, then deposit money into a savings account and use it to pay off the loan. This will really help your credit score and could save you a lot when you purchase your first home.

What I did was take out small personal loans and pay back the loan with the loan. I also go unsecured credit cards and paid them off before they were do each month. Well ideally, having a credit card can teach you valuable lessons about spending within your means and managing your money well. I know that since I’ve had one, I’ve been especially careful with my purchases.

This is of course a great way to build your credit score, but it’s dangerous advice – it requires a great deal of self dicipline (especially at college age) to not be tempted into spending too much.

I got a credit card in college because my parents wanted me to build my credit score, so I treated it as cash (not spending more cash than you have), and it has worked out really well to give me great spending habits.
