For me the best way has always been discussion, take your time, be calm, and try to talk with him before, it works for me with my 3 children, good luck

I myself am a high school student. the school's policy is no matter what if your involved your are expelled. this means i could be walking down the hall and some one could just puch me in the face, say my buddy CJ comes and pulls the dude off me well, by this policy all three of us are expelled. i was involved for being hit,CJ is expelled for have physical contact that is unwanted , and the guy who hit me for well must i say it...

i have to say this policy is retarded, our old policy was great it was the three hit policy.
it shouldnt really have to be explained.

My son was sucker punched at school by another student and reacted by defending himself (or fighting back) and received the exact same punishment has his perpetrator, 8 days suspension plus community service through an arbitration system!!!!! I appealed to the school and school board with no success and I am in the process of deciding whether to accept this punishment or fight it through the court system which we all know is unfair and expensive.

@Andy: Exactly, often times if you don't even fight back, you'll receive punishment. Schools claim they want to prevent harassment, but when harassment occurs in its most serious form, you're still likely to be punished.

the "no tolerance" policy doesn't just affect fighting. kids aren't even allowed to play "cops and robbers" on the playground anymore.

not to mention, the school my brother's at? even if you do nothing and just sit there getting the crap kicked out of you, they suspend you. there is zero way for a victim to not be punished. the geeky kid who got beat up for wearing thick glasses gets a week's suspension, sitting right next to the well known bully who beat him up.

all it does is set kids up to fail as adults. when you're out of school, there are no teachers to tell. you've gotta figure out how to deal with the situation yourself. while talking your way out of bad situations is preferable, you need to know that in the adult world, just like in school, the other person probably isn't interested in "talking it out" and you need to at least know how to dodge when someone throws a punch at you.

Fighing is not the way to solve disputesbut sometime one or the other or both partys come to that level to settle. Remember the founding fathers Alexander Hamilton and Arron Burr. Gentlemen of the past settle disputes with guns sometimes. Times have changed but have men that much.
