Now playing: Prototype

Now that it’s summer, I’ve found myself with a lot of free time. How better to spend that than with a fun new game?

My game of choice: Prototype.

To sum up this game quickly, think Grand Theft Auto, but with super powers. You can roam around the city freely, running up buildings, jumping around, gliding through the air, and causing general mayhem, and on the way you can do missions to work through the storyline.

I’m just starting out in the game, but already I’m liking a lot. Prototype is centered in New York City, meaning there are tons of large buildings to climb up and a huge town to roam around.

The fun in Prototype definitely comes from your super powers. You can spawn large claws or huge fists. You can pick up cars. You can hijack tanks. You can absorb people and become them. As you play, you unlock more powers.

Admittedly, I’m not too keen on the graphics. Although my computer’s not the best, I feel like the graphics could be far more sharp and interesting.

Here’s a gameplay video, if you’re curious:

This game is amazing. I’ve been having tons of fun with it, playing it along with friends. (No multiplayer, I hear it got removed?) I recommend going through Free Roam first and building up EP so you can get your upgrades as soon as they’re available. Also, for some reason, since it’s just out and has a good story, apparently people aren’t too thoughtful before unknowingly divulging spoilers… No fun.

I love playing this game but more recent I have been busy playing Dark Orbit. I wish I could give more time to play Prototype. Awesome.

It looks quite good, but it’s not for me. Personally I prefer games that a realistic, in terms of ‘it could actually happen’, the superpowers idea puts me off a bit.

I love the superpowers aspect of Prototype. It doesn’t quite have the staying power to keep me coming back though. I enjoyed it, but it’s nowhere near as addictive as GTA.

@Amy: I’m finding that a bit true too — the free roam in Prototype isn’t quite as enjoyable as Grand Theft Auto’s, for some strange reason.

I have a friend of mine who is all about me getting into Prototype too, but I really wasn’t a fan of the graphics. I do think I’ll check it out if you can have claws and pick up cars though!

@Mark: Yeah the graphics really were a bit disappointing, especially considering how hard my laptop works to run the game. But the general premise of the game is a lot of fun!

I’ve heard many good reviews of this game and any game that lets you wander around and do what you want has been widely popular in the past.

@Anthony: I think developers are realizing that gamers not only want to play the main storyline, but mess around and have fun in the game’s world in the meantime. I guess Grand Theft Auto really got the ball rolling with open gameplay.
