Bringing you safely through high school and into college

Article: “Why does college cost so much?”

Today I read this article on MSNBC about why college costs so much. The article was an interview with a William & Mary professor who had researched the costs of college with a colleague.

It turned out not to be quite what I expected, however it was still interesting.

In summary, the article claimed that the reason college costs so much these days when compared to other times is because today’s society demands more of college graduates. Better and more effective services are needed to adequately prepare students for the modern-day work force. More technological equipment is needed to stay up-to-date, for example.

In theory, the increase in college costs should be offset by an increase in wages for college graduates.

What do you think?

I would oppose this thing, the Education which is too essential now a days should not be much costlier, bad luck to those students who pass with great marks and grades but due to lack of money and facilities they could not learn ahead :(

Yes the colleges are becoming a business, actually they were the business, but i would support govt colleges and unis where the education would be free…

As for the “modern things” I have not noticed any of it in my uni, they used it to build their buildings and for themselves, we still used the very old computers in the labs and stuff, its not like it helped but also some teachers had a really low salary as well while we were paying quite hefty amounts… So i wonder where all the money went… =\

Yes, I agree with you. The society has changed. People mind set has changed. They are looking education as investment and every parent want their son to study in reputed institutes and they are ready to spend tonns and tonns of money.
When there is a market for this, it is very clear that the cost would go high. Good post!

My wife works at a college and does some of the payroll. All the top people in the Universities are raking in huge incomes! Deans are making from $200,000 – $500,000K a year! Top executives are making even more than that.

Cut their wages back to a reasonable amount and college would be cheaper.

I can see why most colleges cost so much and I also believe that the more money they spend on equipment, tools and technology will make it easier for students to learn and SUCCEED instead of failing, especially those of us that have slight learning disabilities such as myself – but I still made it through my initially class even though it took me two try’s, I did not get charged the second time around because they wanted me to succeed. Also, thank god for student loans…:)

I totally-totally agree with David!
When there is a market for the education, and it is so, then the prices can be just “whatever” till somebody can pay for that.
It’s a good topic for discussion, thank you!
